Whilst the task must seem daunting, it is not in reality if you follow these top five tips on how to design a small home.
– Open plan is good when it comes to small homes. Walls and doors just make a space look smaller and less spacious. The perfect area to make open plan is the kitchen, living room, and dining hall.
– Consider the purpose of the new small home and ask yourself if there are any rooms that can be discarded. Whilst you may love a dining room, will you be entertaining inside or outside in the garden over a BBQ and on the decking. If there is only going to be two bedrooms to the property, is an en-suite bathroom really necessary.
– When designing, pay special attention to where doors and windows are going to be. Having lots of small windows on every wall will be a nightmare when it comes to putting storage cupboards etc in the room. Know the purpose of each room and decide on how it will be used and where storage furniture will be placed.
– Allow as much light in the property as possible. Windows should be big as the light coming into the property will give a bigger illusion of space.
– Don’t forget to make use of basements and attics where possible. Many children love the thought of having an attic bedroom and the basement can be used for storage or as a utility room.
